Little did I know that my time spent at Raah Studio would open a new door in my life.
I was tempted to visit Shilpa after I came to know from a common friend that the her studio space was in Shimla. But after reaching there, it was as if I had almost forgotten about exploring Shimla, Studio Raah had captured me completely.
Shilpa's thinking and way of working in this studio is really interesting. The concept: A studio that changes places… Raah, always on the move, so conducive for travellers. And believe me, travellers do teach a lot about life.
In the time spent with Shilpa in the studio, I was able to learn almost all the techniques of print making from her. She is a true artist and a wonderful guide.
Thank you Shilpa and Studio Raah.
What exactly does an artist need to create Art? My answer is - peace of mind and a conducive environment and its a great plus if the space is surrounded by nature. We got it all, staying at Shilpa's space, Studio Raah, in Shimla.
I went to Studio Raah to paint, to explore printmaking and also to relax in the mountains.
The home studio space we stayed in was a beautiful structure made in wood, by the British, during their rule in India. But it was Shilpa who brought it to life, every corner of the house was made spoken. There were paintings by her and her artist friends all over the space, each room in the house had a place for books, all neatly arranged.
My favourite was the closed balcony, where the main studio space is. What an ideal studio space - to work, read, relax, have a tea break and to have long conversations and discussions.
From the studio space we could see the hills of Shimla dotted with colorful houses and tall cedar trees. There was a distinct swag of rosy bliss as a sheet of mist would occasionally spread. It was such a beautiful sight to sit and stare at the scene, day and night alike.
Alongside Shilpa, we learnt and created in different forms of printmaking; woodcut, Monotypes, Cyanotype, Gelpress and Zinc plating etching in Intaglio. The studio is equipped with an etching press so we could easily make editions of our prints. In the end, we invited people to view the works we had created during our time in studio Raah, a studio walkthrough. A great experience to have people view our works and share each others’ thoughts. The joy of staying and working in such a serene and friendly space is something that can not be expressed in words.
